NYC Moms Strike It Rich With Eco-Friendly Products
In this tough economy we’re always hearing about businesses going under. Well, there’s a couple of moms on the Upper West Side who’s new business is going strong, and it’s their kids who helped inspire the award-winning idea, reports CBS station WCBS-TV in New York City.
Tamar Rosenthal and Dana Rubinstein have five children between them, ages 1 to 5.
It was all that bottle washing that inspired the idea for “dapple,” a line of eco-friendly household cleaners, from toy wipes to dish washing liquid.
“Sticky toys, dirty, disgusting residue-filled bottles,” Rosenthal said.
“Just wanted a solution to clean safer, better and more effectively,” Rubinstein said. “What was in her baby bottle … that milk odor and milk residue, I felt never went away.”
Rosenthal’s daughter, Evie, also has severe allergies to a lot of ingredients found in conventional cleaners, so the two friends worked with a team of pediatricians and green chemists to come up with their child-friendly line, which hit the market six months ago.
The idea was such a hit, they beat out more than 5,000 female entrepreneurs nationwide to win Yahoo!’s “Seeds for Success” contest, which awarded them $35,000 for their business, along with mentoring sessions with Carolyn Kepcher, who use to star on “The Apprentice,” and cosmetics mogul Bobbi Brown.
The long-time friends said it’s important to find a great partner and when you come up with an idea to reach out to everyone you can imagine.
“Support can come from places you had no idea it could come from — family, friends, people in the Starbucks line,” Rubinstein said.
“If you have a great idea and you’re confident that consumers want what you have, you should try,” Rosenthal added.
Right now, dapple is available online and at several baby stores in New York City such as Albee’s, but next month they’ll start appearing on store shelves nationwide.
