Enhancing carbon sequestration in wood

Instead of deforesting tropical rainforests for the highest quality hardwoods, we can essentially make them from trees that grow in northern climates. Wood that is grown via sustainable forestry practices and modified with our acetylation process provides a far more sustainable model for producing high-performance lumber. If the wood is both grown and used locally, so much the better.

How Much of the World’s Energy Could Come from Solar and Wind Power

“The promotion of renewable energy involves political and economic instruments and business interests as well as research into sustainable energy technologies. Through this workshop we want to bring together key players in society to pave the way in a joint effort for more renewable energy. Not just in Denmark and Europe, but globally. We want to help developing countries find new ways for sustainable development, “says Director Henrik Bindslev, Risø DTU.

Iceland’s Geothermal Success

I lived in Iceland for two years and it was a time that left quite an impression on me. Iceland is not an easy nation to characterize or label. You hear the phrase, “fire & ice” quite a bit which symbolizes much more than just Iceland’s geology. This phrase is a bit of an oxymoron but seems to sum up much of Iceland including its culture, economy and hardy population.

Tax breaks for wind power irk some; Wind business thrives without subsidies, argues former teacher

While other Portland greenies and politicians are going gaga for wind power, the former Irvington Elementary School teacher argues the state is throwing away tax breaks to lure windmills that provide few permanent jobs and would locate here anyway. “This is an astounding trick that’s being played on taxpayers,” said Wiser, volunteer leader of the group Tax Fairness Oregon.

Beauty goes green

Green products can be broken down into two basic categories

1. Products that have been manufactured and packaged using the cleanest and greenest energy, manufacturing practices, and packaging possible. Look for:

* Companies using sustainable energy sources such as wind power.
* Packaging made using recycled materials and/or printed with soy ink. Choose containers that can be recycled or re-used and re-filled.

Houses use Mother Nature’s warmth

A single piece of equipment has the ability to heat and cool a home while providing some or all of a home’s hot water as well. Geothermal systems can save 30 to 70 percent on monthly bills. During the heating cycle, the fluid circulates through the loop, extracting heat from the ground. The heat energy is transferred to the geothermal unit. The unit compresses the extracted heat to a high temperature and delivers it into the home through a normal duct system or radiant heat system.
“With the cost of heating and cooling homes continuing to climb, consumers are financing the costs of energy-saving measures in their homes, both new and existing. When weighing the initial cost against the energy savings and tax advantages, the cost of the upgrades in the end are small. In some cases, the savings offset the cost in a short period of time,” he said.

Hometown History: Solar energy pioneer has city ties

He developed a method of using flat-plate collectors that heated hundreds of gallons of water, and then kept the water warm at night by storing it in an insulated basin. Willsie then ran tubes into the heated water, and sent sulfur dioxide through the tubes, transforming it into a high-pressure vapor, which operated the engine. Essentially, Willsie became the first to harness solar energy for use when the sun wasn’t out.

Turbine project aims to link education, real world

The mission of the spinners is to increase educational awareness of renewable sources of power, said Ruth Douglas Miller, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at K-State. Each machine has a 12-foot diameter and produces two kilowatts, approximately the energy needed to power a hair dryer.

Spanish wind power record

The record for electricity production from wind power was beaten again on 24th November at around 0500am when around 43% of power in Spain (9,253 MW) was covered. By the end of the year wind power will have covered 11% of Spain’s needs. Spain is the third-largest generator of wind power in the world, with about 16,000 MW of installed capacity with plans for 20,000 MW by 2010.
