10 ways to save money by going green: Ecofriendly.in

One of the downsides of the green initiatives is been caught in the fancy of the general public that the cost of many products and solutions that have sprung up appear prohibitive. While some of it arises from the desire to cash in on a trending behavior, much of it translates to long term saving in terms of cost of ownership. With a challenging economy putting the squeeze on every wallet, the everyday green warrior might wonder how going green and saving money can be brought together.

There are plenty of small ways that you can contribute to the greening of the planet while easing off the pressure on your budget. Here are 10 simple steps that you can take to go green and save money doing so:

1. Recycle Plastic Bags

Common sense dictates that if each person consumes a few less plastic bags, the impact on the environment will be huge. Use them as trash liners, carry them when you go shopping, use them as padding while packing gifts, tie them over your shoes when going out in the rain; use your imagination to come up with new ways of reusing them.

2. Drive gently

We burn unnecessary fuel when we drive inconsistently or brake and accelerate frequently. Studies prove that an even speed at the top end of recommended RPMs gives the best mileage. Control the desire to get ahead of the crowd. Use the brake wisely and sparingly so that you make the maximum of the momentum you have built up with already paid for gas.

3. Switch to CFLs

Replace the most used lighting in your house with compact fluorescent bulbs. Though the initial cost may seem high, this will translate to savings month after month.

4. Replace old appliances

The new Energy Star rating system will let you identify appliances that are energy efficient. Old appliances may be consuming much more power that you can imagine.

5. Keep your tires inflated to optimum

Always keep your tire pressures at the recommended level. A poorly inflated tire can result in as much as 3 percent waste of mileage from the resulting drag.

6. Dump disposables

Whether it be paper towels, styrofoam cups, water bottles or razor cartridges, let go of any disposable consumer goods for which reusable ones already exist.

7. Power down

Switch off the power supply to computers, peripherals, phone chargers and other gadgets when not in use. You may be surprised at how much power is wasted just keeping those millions of pilot lamps on.

8. Carpool

Join a carpool, or better still, start one. Use bulletin boards and social networks to let your near ones know about your planned trips and routes, so that they can join you and perhaps take the edge off the gas expenses. Plan ahead so that you can club multiple trips into one.

9. Turn the thermostat down a little

A couple of degrees difference in home air conditioning is not unbearable. Turn your heater down 2 degrees when it is cold and up 2 degrees during summer and you will see a major difference in your expenses.

10. Buy the largest package size

Buying the largest available package size for more products not only gets you the lowest price for it per volume unit but also helps the planet by reducing excess packaging material.

All of the above suggestions may look easy to include as habits in your daily life, and it is easy to see that they can lead to significant reduction in environmental damage if adopted by growing number of people. The bonus is that each of them will also translate to considerable savings over the months and years. In addition to this, by adopting such measures, you will set yourself out to be a role model for others to emulate and help save the planet.
