Investing in Carbon Capture and Storage & Clean Coal: Obama and Harper’s “Environmental” Initiative

The Toronto Star article indicates that the oil sands are an important economic and energy resource for Canada, in the same way that coal resources are in the United States. This seems to me to suggest that Obama and Harper have put the writing on the wall for all to read: Oil and Coal are here to stay as mainstream parts of our energy supply mix.

Ontario gets in on green energy act

Energy sustainability demands that we shift from dependence on nonrenewables to renewables like solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, wave, and biomass. Energy efficiency and conservation will be important parts of that shift. It’s an inescapable fact. And so, will we continue to deplete the nonrenewables and face the disastrous consequences of climate change and radioactive waste, or will we embark on a crash program to get onto renewables? Wind Farm – Mr Mayor this would show you are a man with Vision.

What’s more, this inexhaustible domestic resource helps break our dependency on gas and other fuels to fire our generators. Unlike oil, we can’t run out of wind. Plus there’s no geopolitical “risk premium” we have to pay… there is no OPEC breathing down our neck… no taxes or royalties we have to pay anyone. As a bonus, wind is inflation proof — once you build the plant, your energy cost is virtually fixed — no surprises from volatile fuel prices.
