Iceland’s Geothermal Success

I lived in Iceland for two years and it was a time that left quite an impression on me. Iceland is not an easy nation to characterize or label. You hear the phrase, “fire & ice” quite a bit which symbolizes much more than just Iceland’s geology. This phrase is a bit of an oxymoron but seems to sum up much of Iceland including its culture, economy and hardy population.

Houses use Mother Nature’s warmth

A single piece of equipment has the ability to heat and cool a home while providing some or all of a home’s hot water as well. Geothermal systems can save 30 to 70 percent on monthly bills. During the heating cycle, the fluid circulates through the loop, extracting heat from the ground. The heat energy is transferred to the geothermal unit. The unit compresses the extracted heat to a high temperature and delivers it into the home through a normal duct system or radiant heat system.
“With the cost of heating and cooling homes continuing to climb, consumers are financing the costs of energy-saving measures in their homes, both new and existing. When weighing the initial cost against the energy savings and tax advantages, the cost of the upgrades in the end are small. In some cases, the savings offset the cost in a short period of time,” he said.

As you can see, there are various renewable energy sources available to us as an alternative to fossil fuels. There are many advantages to them among the most popular being that they will not deplete in supply, meaning they will be around forever. Renewable energy sources are not new. Energy production and quarterly review of economy

With regard to interest rates developments, average nominal interest rate on savings deposit and demand deposits remained at the preceding quarter level of 4.08 and 0.04. On the other hand, weighted time deposits rate on average increased to 5.18 from the 5.07 percent a year earlier. Average lending rate also remained at 11.5 percent. Meanwhile, yields on T-bills also tended to rise to 0.5 percent from 0.2 percent during the same period. Yet, real interest rates remained negative owing to higher inflation.
